Starting mid-2025 after an exact date is to be announced, United States citizens will need authorization to travel to Italy and other EU countries known as ETIAS. Here’s what you need to know.
What is ETIAS?
The European Travel Information and Authorization System (ETIAS) is a new entry requirement for visa-exempt travelers visiting the Schengen Area, which includes Italy. Designed to bolster security and simplify border processes, ETIAS enhances safety across EU member states.
How Does ETIAS Work?
ETIAS is an online pre-screening system for travelers entering the European Schengen Area. Eligible travelers will need to fill out an online application with their personal details, including name, birth date, passport information, and travel plans. Applicants must also respond to security and health questions.
After submission, the application is automatically checked against EU databases, such as the Schengen Information System (SIS), the Visa Information System (VIS), Europol, and Interpol. If the applicant passes all criteria and poses no health or security risk, they’ll receive their ETIAS authorization by email.
How Will ETIAS Affect Travel to Italy?
ETIAS introduces a new step for those planning to visit Italy. While it’s not a visa, ETIAS authorization is mandatory for citizens of visa-exempt countries like the UK, US, Canada, and Australia. Without ETIAS approval, travelers may be denied entry into Italy and other Schengen Area countries.
The good news is that the ETIAS application is simple and can be completed online. Once approved, ETIAS allows travelers to stay in Italy and the Schengen Area for up to 90 days within a 180-day period for tourism, business, or transit.
